Worshiping God is what we do as Christians at St. James UMC.  If a friend asked you, “What DO Christians believe?” what would you tell them?  Would you break out in a sweat?  Would you quickly dial the Church office and say, “Please, get Bill on the phone for me so he can answer this question for me!”  What would you do?  Here are basic truths found in the Holy Scriptures coupled with excerpts from an old United Methodist Handbook.

FOLLOWERS OF JESUS BELIEVE:  God reveals Himself as three distinct Persons who are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe in One God who created the world and all that is in it.  We believe that God is the ruler of the universe.  We believe that God is loving and that we can experience His love and grace.  When we say that God is One, we mean that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have different personalities and job descriptions.  As One, though, they are never divided and always united in love, purpose, and in their identity as God.

We believe that Jesus was human.  He lived as a man and died when He was crucified.  We believe that Jesus is divine.  He is the Son of God and God the Son.  We believe that the Father raised Jesus from the dead and the risen Christ lives today.  We believe that Jesus is our Savior and in Him we receive abundant life and the forgiveness of our sins.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is God with us.  We believe the Holy Spirit comforts us when we are in need and convicts us when we stray from Him.  We believe the Holy Spirit causes us to desire and live for Father God’s will and empowers us to live obediently.

We believe God created people in God’s image.  We believe that we can choose to accept or reject a relationship with God.  (Let me add my thoughts here by saying that when one rejects Christ, they find themselves deployed to a place that isn’t known for seasonally cool temperatures!  See Matthew 25:41.)

We believe that the Bible is God’s Word.  (In other words, since God has spoken to us in the Bible, we need to know what He says and then do what He says!)

In a day when people change their beliefs more frequently than they change their clothes, we believe God’s teachings never change!
